Holder, Kyle Matthew
U.S. Army Private First Class Kyle Matthew Holder, 18, of Conroe, Texas, was killed in action on November 17, 2010, in Kandahar, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Kyle Matthew Holder was an 18-year-old soldier from Conroe, Texas. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was assigned to Troop C, 1st Squadron, 38th Cavalry Regiment, 525th Battlefield Surveillance Brigade, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, Holder died on November 17, 2010, in Kandahar province, southern Afghanistan. The official release stated he was killed by an improvised explosive device while on a dismounted patrol.
His death occurred during a period of intense fighting in the Afghan south. In late 2009, the U.S. had ordered a troop surge, and by 2010, coalition forces were heavily engaged in clearing operations in Kandahar, a Taliban stronghold. The use of improvised explosive devices was the leading cause of coalition casualties that year.
Holder's body was returned to the United States. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. His funeral was held in his hometown of Conroe.
Holder is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Veterans Memorial Park in Conroe and on online veterans' remembrance sites. He was one of the youngest American service members to die in Afghanistan in 2010.
