Holbrook, Jason Ellis
Captain Jason Ellis Holbrook, 28, of Burnet, Texas, was a U.S. Army Special Forces officer. He was killed in Tsagay, Afghanistan, on July 29, 2010.
Their Story
Jason Ellis Holbrook was born on August 21, 1981. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 2003 and was commissioned as an infantry officer. Holbrook later qualified for the Special Forces, serving as a detachment commander with the 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne). He was deployed multiple times in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On July 29, 2010, Captain Holbrook was part of a mounted patrol in Tsagay, a village in Zabul province, southern Afghanistan. According to U.S. military reports, his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED). He died from wounds sustained in the blast. Another U.S. soldier, Staff Sergeant Conrad A. Mora, was killed in the same incident.
Holbrook's death occurred during a period of intense fighting in Afghanistan. In late 2009, the U.S. had ordered a troop surge, increasing its presence to over 100,000 personnel by mid-2010. Zabul province, bordering Pakistan, was a known transit area for insurgent fighters and a frequent site of IED attacks against coalition and Afghan forces.
The Department of Defense announced Holbrook's death on July 30, 2010. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Captain. His awards and decorations included the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. A memorial service was held at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
Captain Holbrook is remembered by his unit and community. In 2011, a memorial stone was dedicated in his honor at the Travis County Courthouse in Austin, Texas. His name is inscribed on Panel 9W, Line 110 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum.
