Staff Sergeant Brian Scott Hobbs was a 31-year-old soldier from Mesa, Arizona. He served with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, part of the 25th Infantry Division based at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.
On October 14, 2004, Hobbs was killed during a combat operation in the village of Miam Do, located in Afghanistan's Kunar Province near the Pakistani border. According to U.S. military reports, his unit was conducting a patrol when it came under enemy small-arms fire.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2004, U.S. and allied forces were engaged in counter-insurgency operations against Taliban and Al-Qaeda remnants, particularly in the mountainous eastern provinces.
The Department of Defense announced his death on October 16, 2004. He was survived by his wife and children. His remains were returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors.
Staff Sergeant Hobbs is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Schofield Barracks and on online veterans' memorials. His battalion continued operations in Kunar Province for several more months before returning to Hawaii.
