Jason Daniel Hill was a 20-year-old Marine from Poway, California. He served with the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines, part of Regimental Combat Team 8, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), based out of Twentynine Palms, California. The unit deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On June 11, 2011, Hill was killed by enemy action in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. He was one of two Marines from his battalion killed that day, according to a Marine Corps statement. The specific incident was not detailed in public releases, but the area was a center of intense combat operations against Taliban insurgents.
Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan, began in October 2001. By 2011, the war was in its tenth year, with a major focus on counterinsurgency and training Afghan forces in provinces like Helmand.
