Brigadier General Terence John Hildner, 49, of Fairfax, Virginia, was a U.S. Army officer serving with the 13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary). He died on February 3, 2012, in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Terence John Hildner was a career U.S. Army officer who rose to the rank of brigadier general. He was a 1985 graduate of the Virginia Military Institute and later earned a master's degree from the University of Texas at Austin. His service included multiple overseas deployments, including to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa, before his assignment to Afghanistan.

Brigadier General Hildner died of natural causes while serving in Kabul. According to the Department of Defense, he suffered an apparent heart attack at his headquarters. He was the commander of the 13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary), a logistics unit responsible for managing the flow of supplies and equipment for U.S. and coalition forces across Afghanistan.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In its final years, the operation involved a surge of U.S. forces aimed at stabilizing the country and training Afghan security forces. Hildner's role in sustainment was critical to supporting these widespread operations.

The Army announced his death on February 4, 2012. His passing was noted by senior military officials, including the commander of U.S. Central Command, General James N. Mattis, who described him as a dedicated soldier. Hildner was the highest-ranking U.S. officer to die in Afghanistan up to that point in the conflict.

Brigadier General Hildner was posthumously awarded the Legion of Merit. He is remembered by the Virginia Military Institute, where a memorial service was held, and by the units he commanded for his leadership in complex logistical operations during a pivotal phase of the war.
