Private Charles Milton High IV, 21, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, was a U.S. Army infantryman. He was killed in action on August 17, 2010, in Managai, Kunar Province, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Charles Milton High IV was a 21-year-old soldier from Albuquerque, New Mexico. He served as a Private (PV2) with Company D, 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
On August 17, 2010, High was killed during combat operations in the village of Managai, in Afghanistan's eastern Kunar Province. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his death was the result of hostile enemy fire. The area was known for insurgent activity and rugged terrain.
High's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In the summer of 2010, U.S. and allied forces were engaged in a major troop surge, conducting counterinsurgency operations, particularly in volatile eastern provinces like Kunar.
Following his death, High was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors.
He is memorialized on the 101st Airborne Division memorial at Fort Campbell and on online veterans' memorials. His name is included on the Afghanistan War casualty lists maintained by several major news organizations.
