Sgt. Tanner Stone Higgins, 23, of Yantis, Texas, was a U.S. Army Ranger killed in Logar province, Afghanistan, on April 14, 2012.
Their Story
Tanner Stone Higgins was born on June 24, 1988, in Dallas, Texas, and grew up in the small town of Yantis. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2007 and was assigned to Company D, 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, based at Hunter Army Airfield in Georgia. He served as a team leader and had completed multiple combat deployments to Afghanistan.
On April 14, 2012, Higgins was part of a Ranger unit conducting a combat operation in the Baraki Barak district of Logar province, a volatile area south of Kabul. According to U.S. Department of Defense reports, he was killed by enemy small-arms fire during the mission. No other details of the specific engagement were publicly released.
Higgins died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. In 2012, the war was in its eleventh year, with U.S. and NATO forces engaged in counterinsurgency operations and training Afghan national security forces.
Following his death, the Department of Defense officially announced his loss. His body was returned to Texas. A memorial service was held in his hometown of Yantis, where he was remembered by family, friends, and fellow soldiers.
Sgt. Higgins was posthumously promoted from Specialist. He is memorialized on the 75th Ranger Regiment's rolls and on the Afghanistan War casualty lists. His name is inscribed on the Texas Capitol's memorial for veterans of the Global War on Terror.
