Their Story
David Michael Hierholzer was a 27-year-old sergeant from Lewisburg, Tennessee. He served with Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, based at Fort Drum, New York. The battalion was part of the 10th Mountain Division.
On July 24, 2006, Sergeant Hierholzer was killed during combat operations in the village of Pesch, located in Afghanistan's Kunar Province. According to U.S. military reports, his unit was engaged in a firefight with enemy forces. He was one of two soldiers from his company killed that day.
Hierholzer's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By mid-2006, the conflict was characterized by a resurgence of Taliban and insurgent activity, particularly in the mountainous eastern provinces along the border with Pakistan.
Following his death, Sergeant Hierholzer was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried in his home state of Tennessee. The Department of Defense officially announced his death on July 26, 2006.
He is remembered on memorials in Tennessee and at Fort Drum. His battalion, the 1-32 Infantry, continued its deployment in Afghanistan for several more months following the losses in July 2006.
