Their Story

David Alan Hess was a 25-year-old specialist from Ruskin, Florida, serving with the U.S. Army. He was assigned to Company D, 526th Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

On October 10, 2010, Hess was killed in Mollyan, Zabul province, Afghanistan. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his death was the result of hostile action. Official records list the cause as a direct fire engagement with enemy forces.

Hess died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. His death occurred during a period of increased U.S. troop presence, known as the surge, which aimed to stabilize the country and train Afghan security forces.

Following his death, Hess was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. His body was returned to Florida, where he was buried with military honors.

He is remembered on memorials at Fort Campbell and in his hometown. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Veterans Park of Monument in Tampa, Florida.
