Sgt. 1st Class Rocky H. Herrera, 43, of Salt Lake City, Utah, was a U.S. Army engineer. He died in a hostile incident in Jaji, Afghanistan, on August 28, 2007.

Their Story

Sgt. 1st Class Rocky H. Herrera was a 43-year-old soldier from Salt Lake City, Utah, serving on active duty with the U.S. Army. He was assigned to the 585th Engineer Company, 864th Engineer Combat Battalion, based out of Fort Lewis, Washington. Herrera had previously deployed to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa before his assignment to Afghanistan.

On August 28, 2007, Herrera was killed in Jaji, a district in Afghanistan's Paktiya province. According to the Department of Defense, his death resulted from a hostile incident. Media reports from the time indicate the area was a known insurgent stronghold, and his unit was likely engaged in route clearance or construction operations.

Herrera's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2007, the conflict was in a phase characterized by a resurgent Taliban and intensified combat, particularly in the eastern provinces along the border with Pakistan.

The Department of Defense announced Herrera's death on August 30, 2007. He was survived by his wife and children. A memorial service was reportedly held at Fort Lewis.
