Staff Sergeant Octavio Herrera was a 26-year-old soldier from Caldwell, Idaho, serving with Battery B, 4th Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. He was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On August 11, 2013, Herrera was killed in Dzadran, a district in Afghanistan's Paktia province. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his death resulted from a hostile event. The specific tactical circumstances of the incident were not detailed in public releases.
