Their Story

Roberto Antonio Hernandez II was a 21-year-old soldier from the Queens neighborhood of Far Rockaway, New York. He served as a Specialist in the United States Army, assigned to Task Force Yukon, 549th Military Police Company.

On June 2, 2009, Hernandez was killed in Paktya Province, a volatile region in eastern Afghanistan near the Pakistani border. According to the Department of Defense, he died of wounds sustained from hostile fire. He was one of two soldiers from his unit killed in the same incident.

Hernandez died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The operation aimed to dismantle al-Qaeda and remove the Taliban from power, evolving into a protracted counterinsurgency and nation-building effort.

His death was reported by several news outlets, including The New York Times, which listed him among the service members killed in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Army posthumously awarded Hernandez the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.
