Their Story
Alex Hernandez III was a 21-year-old soldier from Round Rock, Texas. He served as a Specialist with Company B, 3rd Battalion, 25th Aviation Regiment, 25th Combat Aviation Brigade, based out of Wheeler Army Airfield, Hawaii. His service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On May 12, 2012, Hernandez died in Kandahar province, southern Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he was killed by enemy small arms fire while on patrol. The incident occurred during a period of intense fighting in the region, a traditional Taliban stronghold.
Hernandez was killed during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2012, the conflict was in its eleventh year, with a focus on counterinsurgency operations and training Afghan security forces. Kandahar was a central theater of operations.
His death was recorded in the Defense Casualty Analysis System on the day it occurred. Hernandez was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. His family and community in Texas held memorial services.
His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Texas Capitol. He is remembered by his unit and is listed on memorials honoring those who died in the war.
