Their Story
Ken King Hermogino was a 30-year-old sergeant from Edwards Air Force Base, California, serving in the U.S. Army. He was assigned to Troop A, 7th Squadron, 10th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Carson, Colorado. His military service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On May 9, 2011, Sergeant Hermogino was killed in Herat province, western Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he died of wounds sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. The attack occurred in the Shindand district, a known insurgent transit area.
Hermogino's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2011, the conflict was in its tenth year, marked by a surge of U.S. troops aimed at countering a resilient Taliban insurgency, particularly in the country's southern and eastern regions. Herat province, bordering Iran, was considered relatively stable but still experienced insurgent activity.
The Army announced his death on May 11, 2011. He was survived by his wife and children. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. His remains were returned to the United States for burial.
Sergeant Hermogino is memorialized on the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division memorial at Fort Carson and on online veterans' memorials. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Colorado State Capitol.
