Heredia, Edgar Alberto
Staff Sergeant Edgar Alberto Heredia, 28, of Houston, Texas, was a U.S. Marine killed in hostile action in Afghanistan on June 26, 2008, during Operation Enduring Freedom.
Their Story
Edgar Alberto Heredia was born in Houston, Texas, and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was assigned as a Staff Sergeant to Headquarters Company, 2nd Marine Special Operations Battalion, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. The battalion was part of the Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command (MARSOC), a relatively new unit established in 2006 to conduct special operations.
On June 26, 2008, Heredia was killed in hostile action in Afghanistan's Farah Province. According to military reports, he was part of a Marine Special Operations Team conducting combat operations when he was fatally wounded. The Department of Defense announcement did not specify the exact tactical circumstances of his death.
Heredia's death occurred during a period of intensified fighting in Afghanistan. By 2008, Taliban insurgents had regrouped and were employing increasingly sophisticated improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and direct attacks against coalition and Afghan forces. U.S. and NATO troop levels were rising in response, with a focus on counterinsurgency operations in southern and western provinces like Farah.
The Marine Corps confirmed Heredia's death the following day. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. Public records and casualty lists note his service, but detailed public statements from family or unit members regarding his death are not widely documented in major news archives.
Staff Sergeant Heredia is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty rolls and by veterans' organizations. His name appears on the 'Faces of the Fallen' casualty database maintained by the Washington Post and similar memorials dedicated to service members killed in Operation Enduring Freedom.
