Their Story
John Michael Hennen was a 26-year-old soldier from Vinton, Louisiana. He served as a Sergeant First Class with the Louisiana Army National Guard, assigned to Joint Force Headquarters, Detachment 2, based in New Orleans.
On June 17, 2007, Hennen was killed by enemy small-arms fire during a dismounted patrol in the Panjway district of Kandahar province, Afghanistan. The district was a known insurgent stronghold, and his unit was engaged in combat operations there.
Hennen's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The operation involved counter-insurgency and stability missions against Taliban and al-Qaeda forces.
Following his death, Hennen was posthumously promoted from Staff Sergeant to Sergeant First Class. He was survived by his wife and young daughter. His funeral was held in his hometown of Vinton.
Sergeant First Class Hennen is memorialized on the Louisiana Veterans Memorial Wall in Baton Rouge and is listed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Georgia. His name is inscribed on Panel 21W, Line 75 of the Afghanistan Casualties Memorial at the Museum of the Forgotten Warrior in California.
