Bryan James Henderson, 27, was a U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer 2 from Franklin, Louisiana. He was killed in action in Kandahar, Afghanistan, on March 11, 2013.

Their Story

Bryan James Henderson was a 27-year-old Chief Warrant Officer 2 from Franklin, Louisiana. He served with Bravo Company, 4th Battalion, 3rd Aviation Regiment, part of the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade based at Hunter Army Airfield in Georgia. His unit was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

On March 11, 2013, Henderson died in Kandahar province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day, stating he was killed during a combat operation. He was piloting an AH-64 Apache attack helicopter that reportedly crashed in the Daman district, south of Kandahar city. Another soldier, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Joshua T. Greenwood, 34, of Grand Ledge, Michigan, also died in the incident.

Henderson's death occurred during the final years of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2013, the conflict was in a phase where international forces were increasingly focused on training Afghan security units and conducting counterinsurgency operations, particularly in the volatile southern provinces like Kandahar.

The Army posthumously awarded Henderson the Bronze Star Medal and Air Medal for his service. He was survived by his wife, parents, and siblings. His remains were returned to the United States, and he was buried in his home state of Louisiana.

Henderson is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Columbus, Georgia, and on online veterans' memorials. His unit, the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, continued its deployment in Afghanistan following the incident.
