Senior Chief Petty Officer Daniel Richard Healy, 36, of Exeter, New Hampshire, was a U.S. Navy SEAL assigned to SDV Team One. He was killed in a helicopter crash in Asadabad, Afghanistan, on June 28, 2005.

Their Story

Daniel Richard Healy was a Senior Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy, serving with SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team One (SDV-1) based in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. A native of Exeter, New Hampshire, the 36-year-old had deployed to multiple theaters, including Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa, as part of his service.

On June 28, 2005, Healy was killed in Kunar Province, Afghanistan. He was one of 16 U.S. service members aboard a CH-47 Chinook helicopter, call name "Turbine 33," that was shot down by a rocket-propelled grenade while on a mission to reinforce a four-man SEAL reconnaissance team engaged in a firefight. The crash, near the town of Asadabad, resulted in the single largest loss of life for U.S. forces in Afghanistan up to that point.

The mission was part of Operation Red Wings, a counter-insurgency effort during the larger Operation Enduring Freedom. The objective was to locate and neutralize a local Taliban commander. The operation highlighted the challenging terrain and insurgent tactics in eastern Afghanistan.

The loss of the helicopter and its crew, which included eight SEALs and eight Army Night Stalkers, was met with profound grief within the U.S. special operations community. Memorial services were held in Afghanistan and the United States. Healy was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star with Combat "V" for valor.

Healy is remembered as a dedicated leader. In 2006, the guided-missile destroyer USS *Daniel Inouye* (DDG 118) had its name briefly changed to honor Healy before reverting to its original designation. His name is listed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Navy SEAL Museum.
