Their Story
Master Sergeant Jerome David Hatfield was a 36-year-old U.S. Marine from Axton, Virginia. He served with the 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, part of a Special Purpose Marine Air-Ground Task Force deployed from Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. His service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On July 11, 2009, Hatfield was killed in the Helmand Province district of Khan Neshin. The Marine Corps listed the cause as hostile action. According to reports, his unit was engaged in combat operations in southern Afghanistan at the time of his death.
Hatfield died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In the summer of 2009, U.S. and allied forces were conducting a major offensive, Operation Khanjar, to secure population centers in Helmand Province from Taliban influence.
Following his death, Hatfield was posthumously promoted from Gunnery Sergeant to Master Sergeant. He was survived by his wife and children. A memorial service was held at Camp Lejeune.
Master Sergeant Hatfield's name is inscribed on Panel 23W, Line 111 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Museum of the Marine Corps. He is also listed on the online memorial maintained by the Marine Corps.
