Their Story
James William Harvey II was a 23-year-old sergeant from Toms River, New Jersey. He served with Company D, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Knox, Kentucky. The unit deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On June 20, 2011, Harvey was killed in Molla Kala, a village in the Andar District of Ghazni Province. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. The attack occurred during a period of intense fighting in eastern Afghanistan.
Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan, began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By 2011, the conflict was in its tenth year, with a focus on counterinsurgency operations and training Afghan security forces. Andar District was a known insurgent stronghold.
The Department of Defense announced Harvey's death on June 22, 2011. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant. His awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Army Commendation Medal.
Sergeant Harvey was one of 2,356 American service members who died during Operation Enduring Freedom. He is remembered on memorials in his home state and by his unit.
