Their Story
Calvin Bernard Harrison was a 31-year-old native of San Antonio, Texas. He served as a Sergeant First Class in the U.S. Army's Company A, 2nd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
On September 29, 2010, Harrison was killed by enemy small-arms fire during a dismounted patrol in Chenar village, located in Afghanistan's Helmand province. He was reportedly part of a joint U.S.-Afghan force conducting a security operation in the area.
Harrison's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2010, the conflict was marked by a significant troop surge and intense counterinsurgency operations, particularly in southern provinces like Helmand.
Following his death, the Department of Defense announced his loss. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. His remains were returned to the United States.
Harrison is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Fort Bragg and on online veterans' memorials. His name is listed on the 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) memorial wall, which honors fallen soldiers from the unit.
