Their Story
Sgt. 1st Class Todd Monroe Harris was a 37-year-old soldier from Tucson, Arizona. He served with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Drum, New York. His military service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On November 3, 2010, Harris died from wounds sustained in a hostile incident in Badghis Province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated the location was approximately 13 kilometers from the village of Ghormach. He was reportedly on a mounted patrol when his unit was struck by an improvised explosive device.
Harris's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The conflict involved coalition forces, the Afghan National Security Forces, and insurgent groups including the Taliban. The area of Badghis Province was known for insurgent activity and contested control.
His death was reported by the Department of Defense and noted in local Arizona media. He was one of at least four U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan during the first week of November 2010, according to casualty reports from that period.
Harris is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists maintained by the Department of Defense and on several online veterans' memorial sites. His unit, the 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, continued its deployment in Afghanistan following his death.
