Corporal Larry Donell Harris Jr., 24, of Thornton, Colorado, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on July 1, 2010.

Their Story

Larry Donell Harris Jr. was born on June 4, 1986. He was a Marine from Thornton, Colorado, who served with the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, part of Regimental Combat Team 7 of the I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward. His unit was based at Camp Pendleton, California, and had deployed to Afghanistan as part of the surge of U.S. forces into the country's southern region.

On July 1, 2010, Corporal Harris was killed in Helmand province, a volatile agricultural region that was a center of Taliban activity and a focal point for U.S. and allied operations. The Department of Defense announced he died while conducting combat operations. He was one of at least seven U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan that day, a period of intense fighting during the summer campaign season.

Harris's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. In 2010, the war was at its peak in terms of U.S. troop levels, with a major focus on clearing insurgent strongholds in Helmand and neighboring Kandahar province to improve security for the Afghan population.

The Department of Defense officially notified his family of his death. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Corporal. His remains were returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors.

Corporal Harris is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Colorado State Capitol and on online veterans' memorials. His name is inscribed on Panel 7W, Line 15 of the Afghanistan Conflict Memorial Wall at the National Museum of the United States Army.
