Their Story
Joseph Graham Harris was a 19-year-old from Sugar Land, Texas. He served as a Private First Class in the U.S. Army, assigned to Company C, 2nd Battalion, 508th Infantry Regiment, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
Harris died on May 3, 2007, at Forward Operating Base Warrior in the Khost province of eastern Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he was killed when his unit came under small arms fire during a dismounted patrol. The area around Khost was a known insurgent stronghold.
His death occurred during a period of intensified fighting in Operation Enduring Freedom. By 2007, Taliban forces had regrouped, and the use of improvised explosive devices and direct fire attacks against coalition forces was increasing. U.S. casualty figures for that year were among the highest of the conflict to that point.
Harris's death was reported by multiple news outlets, including the Houston Chronicle, which noted his Texas hometown. He was one of at least four U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan during the first week of May 2007.
He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum and on online veterans' memorials. His name is listed on Panel 26E, Line 11 of the Afghanistan Conflict Memorial Wall at the National Museum of the United States Army.
