Their Story
Devon Jemail Harris was a 24-year-old soldier from Mesquite, Texas. He served on active duty with the U.S. Army's Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Polk, Louisiana.
On November 27, 2010, Harris was killed in Sayyidabad, a district in Wardak province, west of Kabul. According to the Department of Defense, he died of wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device while on a dismounted patrol. He was one of two soldiers killed in the attack that day.
Harris's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By late 2010, a surge of U.S. forces was underway, with a focus on counterinsurgency operations in provinces like Wardak, where Taliban and other insurgent forces remained active.
Harris was posthumously promoted from Private to Private First Class. He was survived by his mother, father, and siblings. His body was returned to Texas, where he was buried with military honors.
His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Texas Capitol and on the Mesquite Veterans Memorial. He is remembered by his unit and community as a dedicated soldier.
