Pfc. Andrew Martin Harper, 19, of Maidsville, West Virginia, was a U.S. Army soldier killed in action on March 11, 2011, in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Andrew Martin Harper was a 19-year-old from Maidsville, West Virginia. He served as a Private First Class with Company I, 3rd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, which was based in Vilseck, Germany, before deploying to Afghanistan.

According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, Harper died on March 11, 2011, in Kandahar province, southern Afghanistan. The official release stated he was killed in action, though the specific details of the engagement were not publicly disclosed in initial announcements.

Harper's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan. In late 2010, a surge of U.S. forces had pushed into Taliban strongholds in the south, including Kandahar. By early 2011, the region remained a focal point of intense counterinsurgency operations and frequent combat.

His death was reported by local and national news outlets, including the Associated Press. The Pentagon confirmed his identity and unit. He was among the more than 1,800 U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan in 2010 and 2011, the deadliest period of the war.

Harper is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists maintained by the Department of Defense and on the website of the 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment. His name is also inscribed on the Afghanistan and Iraq War Memorial at the Veterans Memorial Park in Morgantown, West Virginia.
