Their Story

Willie James Harley Jr. was a 48-year-old Staff Sergeant from Aiken, South Carolina. He served with the South Carolina Army National Guard's 1221st Engineer Company (Route Clearance), part of Task Force Hammer under the 176th Engineer Brigade. His military service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

On October 1, 2010, Harley was part of a route clearance patrol in Orgun District, Paktika Province, eastern Afghanistan. The patrol's vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device. The blast killed Harley and another soldier, Specialist Luther Rabon, according to Department of Defense announcements and unit statements.

Harley's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The year 2010 saw a significant surge in U.S. troop levels and was the deadliest year of the war for coalition forces, with IEDs being the leading cause of casualties.

The South Carolina National Guard publicly announced the deaths of Harley and Rabon. Harley was posthumously promoted from Sergeant to Staff Sergeant. His funeral was held in Aiken, where he was remembered by fellow soldiers and community members.

Staff Sergeant Harley's name is inscribed on the South Carolina Fallen Heroes Memorial and the Afghanistan War Memorial at the State House in Columbia. He is also listed on the Afghanistan War casualty rolls maintained by the Department of Defense.
