Their Story

Adam Jeffery Hardt was a 19-year-old from Avondale, Arizona, who enlisted in the United States Army. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Drum, New York, as a Specialist.

On March 22, 2009, Hardt was killed in action at Forward Operating Base Airborne in Wardak Province, Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained when his unit was attacked by enemy forces using small arms fire.

Hardt's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. In early 2009, U.S. forces were engaged in a significant troop surge, with intense counterinsurgency operations focused on provinces like Wardak, east of Kabul.

His death was recorded in the Defense Casualty Analysis System. Public records show he was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals.

Adam Hardt is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Veterans Memorial Park in Avondale, Arizona. His name is also inscribed on Panel 35W, Line 65 of the Afghanistan Veterans Memorial Wall in Boston.
