Sgt. Jeremy Franklin Hardison, 23, of Maysville, North Carolina, was a U.S. Army National Guard soldier killed in Khowst City, Afghanistan, on October 1, 2012.
Their Story
Jeremy Franklin Hardison was born on July 10, 1989, and grew up in the small town of Maysville, North Carolina. He enlisted in the North Carolina Army National Guard and served as a sergeant with the 514th Military Police Company, 60th Troop Command, based in Winterville.
On October 1, 2012, Sgt. Hardison was on duty in Khowst City, Khowst Province, in eastern Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He was 23 years old.
Hardison's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By late 2012, the U.S. had begun a drawdown of surge forces, but insurgent attacks, particularly in eastern provinces like Khowst, remained frequent and lethal.
His body was returned to North Carolina, where a funeral service was held at Maysville Baptist Church. He was buried with full military honors at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville, North Carolina.
Sgt. Hardison was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. He is memorialized on the North Carolina Fallen Heroes website and at the National Guard Memorial in Washington, D.C.
