Their Story

Andrew Lee Hand was a 25-year-old specialist in the United States Army from Enterprise, Alabama. He was assigned to Battery C, 5th Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery Regiment, 17th Fires Brigade, based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state.

On July 24, 2010, Hand was killed in Qalat, the capital of Zabul province in southern Afghanistan. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his death was the result of a hostile incident. No further specific details of the engagement were publicly released.

Hand's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In the summer of 2010, the conflict was marked by a significant U.S. troop surge and intense fighting, particularly in the country's southern and eastern regions where insurgent forces were active.

Following his death, Hand's body was returned to Alabama. He was buried with military honors at Meadowlawn Cemetery in Enterprise. The local newspaper, the Enterprise Ledger, reported on his funeral and the community's response.

Hand is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Veterans Park in Enterprise. His name is also inscribed on the 'Wall of Names' at the Alabama State Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Spanish Fort.
