Kimble Andrus Han was a 30-year-old soldier from Lehi, Utah. He served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army's 569th Engineer Company, 4th Engineer Battalion.
On October 23, 2009, Han was killed in Zhari District, Kandahar province, Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, his death resulted from hostile action. The 569th Engineer Company was engaged in route clearance operations, a dangerous task involving the detection and removal of improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
Han's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By late 2009, the conflict was intensifying, with a significant increase in U.S. troop levels and combat operations, particularly in southern provinces like Kandahar.
Following his death, Han was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His funeral was held in American Fork, Utah. He was survived by his wife, parents, and siblings.
Han is memorialized on a monument at Utah Valley University and is listed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Veterans Memorial Park in West Jordan, Utah. His unit, the 569th Engineer Company, was recognized for its route clearance work in a volatile region.
