Their Story

Carl Erik Hammar was a 24-year-old soldier from Lake Havasu City, Arizona. He served as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army, assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion (Airborne), 501st Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), based at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska.

On July 14, 2012, Hammar was killed in the Musa Kheyl District of Afghanistan's Paktiya province. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his death resulted from enemy small-arms fire during a dismounted patrol. He was one of two U.S. soldiers killed in separate incidents in eastern Afghanistan that day.

Hammar's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By mid-2012, the conflict was in its eleventh year, with U.S. and allied forces engaged in counterinsurgency operations and training Afghan national security forces.

The Department of Defense officially announced Hammar's death on July 16, 2012. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors. Public records and local news reports from Arizona noted his passing and service.

Staff Sergeant Hammar is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists maintained by the Department of Defense and on the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America's online remembrance pages. His name is included on the Fallen Heroes Memorial in his home state.
