Their Story
Captain Ryan Preston Hall was a U.S. Air Force special operations officer from Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was assigned to the 319th Special Operations Squadron, part of the 1st Special Operations Wing based at Hurlburt Field, Florida. The squadron's mission involved specialized air support for special operations forces.
On February 18, 2012, Hall died from wounds sustained during a small arms fire engagement near Camp Lemonnier, a major U.S. expeditionary base in Djibouti. The incident occurred while he was supporting operations in the Horn of Africa region. The Department of Defense stated he was killed in action.
Hall's death occurred under Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), the U.S.-led military campaign that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. By 2012, OEF encompassed counterterrorism operations beyond Afghanistan, including the Horn of Africa and the Philippines, where Hall had also reportedly deployed.
Following his death, Hall was posthumously promoted from the rank of captain to major. A memorial service was held at Hurlburt Field. His name is inscribed on the Air Force Memorial in Washington, D.C., and he is listed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Colorado State Capitol.
Major Hall was survived by his wife and parents. He was remembered by his squadron commander as a dedicated combat systems officer. The 319th Special Operations Squadron was later redesignated as the 319th Special Operations Squadron (Remotely Piloted Aircraft) in 2019, reflecting a shift in mission focus.
