U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Jeffrey Alan Hall, 28, of Huntsville, Alabama, was killed by hostile fire on June 1, 2009, in Nerkh, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Jeffrey Alan Hall was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army, assigned to Company B, 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, based at Fort Drum, New York. He was 28 years old and from Huntsville, Alabama. According to military records, his service included deployments to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa prior to Afghanistan.

On June 1, 2009, Hall was killed during a combat operation in the Nerkh district of Afghanistan's Wardak province. The Department of Defense stated the cause was hostile fire. Reports from the time indicate his unit was engaged in counterinsurgency operations in the region.

Hall's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. In 2009, U.S. forces were heavily engaged across the country, with the Taliban insurgency particularly active in provinces like Wardak near Kabul.

Hall was posthumously promoted from Sergeant to Staff Sergeant. He was survived by his wife and children. The Army released a statement honoring his service, and he was buried with military honors.

He is memorialized on the 10th Mountain Division memorial at Fort Drum and on the Afghanistan War casualty lists maintained by the Department of Defense. His name appears on Panel 23W, Line 36 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum.
