Their Story
David Ray Hall was a 31-year-old lance corporal from Elyria, Ohio, serving with the United States Marine Corps. He was assigned to Company G, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 3, Marine Expeditionary Brigade-Afghanistan Forward, part of the 2nd Marine Division based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
On August 31, 2009, Hall was killed in Garmsir District, Helmand Province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of a hostile incident. According to subsequent reporting, he was one of two Marines killed that day when their unit came under small-arms fire while conducting a dismounted patrol.
Hall's death occurred during a period of intense fighting in Helmand Province, a Taliban stronghold. In the summer of 2009, U.S. Marines launched a major offensive, Operation Khanjar, to clear insurgents from the region. Garmsir District, located along the Helmand River, was a strategically significant area where coalition and insurgent forces had repeatedly clashed.
Hall's body was returned to the United States. He was buried at Brookdale Cemetery in Elyria, Ohio. The Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reported on his funeral service, noting his family and community mourned his loss.
Lance Corporal Hall is remembered on memorials for Ohio's fallen service members and is listed on the Afghanistan War casualty rolls. His death was one of 2356 American service member fatalities documented during Operation Enduring Freedom.
