U.S. Army Specialist Blake Wade Hall, 20, of East Prairie, Missouri, was killed in action on August 21, 2005, in Baylough, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Blake Wade Hall was a 20-year-old infantryman from East Prairie, Missouri. He served with Company B, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, which was part of the 173rd Airborne Brigade based in Vicenza, Italy, before deploying to Afghanistan.
On August 21, 2005, Hall was on a combat patrol in the mountainous Baylough district of Zabul province. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, his unit came under hostile small-arms fire during the patrol, resulting in his death.
Hall's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2005, U.S. and allied forces were engaged in counterinsurgency operations against Taliban and Al-Qaeda fighters, particularly in the country's volatile southern and eastern provinces.
The Pentagon announced Hall's death on August 23, 2005. He was posthumously promoted from Private First Class to Specialist. His body was returned to Missouri for burial.
Hall is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield and on online veterans' remembrance sites. His name is included on the 173rd Airborne Brigade memorial in Italy.
