U.S. Army 1st Lieutenant Benjamin John Hall, 24, of Fredericksburg, Virginia, was killed in a vehicle rollover following a roadside bomb attack in Asadabad, Afghanistan, on July 31, 2007.
Their Story
Benjamin John Hall was a 24-year-old 1st Lieutenant from Fredericksburg, Virginia. He served with Company D, 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, based in Vicenza, Italy, as part of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team.
On July 31, 2007, Hall was on patrol in Asadabad, the capital of Kunar Province in eastern Afghanistan. According to U.S. military reports, his vehicle was struck by a roadside bomb. The force of the explosion caused the vehicle to roll over, resulting in his death. The Department of Defense stated the incident was under investigation.
Hall's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan. In 2007, U.S. and NATO forces were engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations, particularly in the volatile eastern provinces bordering Pakistan.
Hall was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. He was survived by his parents and a sister. A memorial service was held at his unit's base in Italy.
His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Columbus, Georgia. In 2008, a street on Forward Operating Base Blessing in Kunar Province was reportedly named 'Hall Street' in his honor.
