Their Story
Scott Alan Hagerty was a 41-year-old Major in the U.S. Army Reserve, assigned to the 451st Civil Affairs Battalion, Detachment 4, based in Pasadena, Texas. A resident of Stillwater, Oklahoma, he was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On June 3, 2008, Hagerty was killed in Zormat, a district in Paktia Province, eastern Afghanistan. According to U.S. military reports, his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED) during a patrol. The attack was part of a surge in insurgent activity in the region that spring.
Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan, began in October 2001. By 2008, the conflict was in its seventh year, with a focus on counterinsurgency and reconstruction efforts. Civil Affairs units like Hagerty's were tasked with building relationships with local populations and supporting governance projects.
The Department of Defense announced Hagerty's death the following day. He was one of at least 10 U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan during the first week of June 2008, according to casualty reports from that period. His remains were returned to the United States.
Hagerty is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists maintained by the Department of Defense and on the website of the 451st Civil Affairs Battalion. His name is inscribed on the Oklahoma Veterans Memorial.
