Lance Corporal Roger Gary Michael Hager, a 20-year-old U.S. Marine from Gibsonville, North Carolina, was killed in action on July 8, 2009, near Forward Operating Base Fiddlers Green in Afghanistan.

Their Story

Roger Gary Michael Hager was a Marine from Gibsonville, North Carolina. He was assigned as a Lance Corporal to Company A, 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, Regimental Combat Team 3, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade (Forward), based at Camp Lejeune.

On July 8, 2009, Hager was killed while conducting combat operations in the vicinity of Forward Operating Base Fiddlers Green in Afghanistan's Helmand Province. The U.S. Department of Defense stated his death resulted from hostile action. He was one of several Marines killed during a major offensive, Operation Khanjar (Strike of the Sword), which began days earlier.

Hager's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In the summer of 2009, U.S. and allied forces launched a large-scale push into Taliban strongholds in southern Afghanistan, particularly Helmand Province, to establish security ahead of national elections.

Following his death, Hager's body was returned to North Carolina. A funeral service was held at his family's church in Gibsonville. The Marine Corps posthumously awarded him the Purple Heart.

Hager was remembered by his unit and community. His name is inscribed on the Gibsonville Veterans Memorial. He was a 2007 graduate of Eastern Guilford High School, where he played football.
