Christian Armando Guzman Rivera was a 21-year-old Marine corporal from Homestead, Florida. He was assigned to 3rd Combat Assault Battalion, Regimental Combat Team 3, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade (Forward), III Marine Expeditionary Force, based in Okinawa, Japan.
On August 6, 2009, Corporal Guzman Rivera died from wounds sustained during a hostile incident in Farah Province, Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense announced his death the following day. He was reportedly involved in combat operations in the province, a region in western Afghanistan known for insurgent activity.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In the summer of 2009, U.S. forces were engaged in a significant troop surge, focusing on clearing Taliban strongholds in southern and western provinces like Farah.
The Marine Corps confirmed his death in a press release. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. His body was returned to the United States for burial.
Corporal Guzman Rivera is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Veterans Park of Homestead in his hometown. His name is also inscribed on Panel 23W, Line 111 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Columbus, Georgia.
