Sergeant Gabriel Guzman was a 25-year-old soldier from Hornbrook, California. He served with Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The unit was part of the 82nd Airborne Division.
On March 8, 2008, Guzman was killed by enemy small-arms fire during a dismounted patrol in Orgun E, Paktika Province, Afghanistan. The patrol was reportedly engaged in a firefight with insurgent forces. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day.
Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan, began in October 2001. By 2008, the conflict was characterized by counterinsurgency operations against Taliban and Al-Qaeda forces, particularly in eastern provinces like Paktika, where Orgun E is located.
