Sgt. Daniel David Gurr, 21, of Vernal, Utah, was a U.S. Marine with 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion. He died on August 5, 2011, in Helmand province, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Daniel David Gurr was a 21-year-old sergeant from Vernal, Utah, serving in the United States Marine Corps. He was assigned to the 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, based out of Okinawa, Japan. His service included deployments to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa before his assignment to Afghanistan.
On August 5, 2011, Sgt. Gurr was killed in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he died of wounds sustained while conducting combat operations. He was reportedly on a foot patrol when his unit came under enemy fire.
Gurr's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2011, the conflict was in its tenth year, with intense counterinsurgency efforts focused on provinces like Helmand, a Taliban stronghold and center of opium production.
His death was announced by the Department of Defense. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant. A memorial service was held for him at Camp Leatherneck in Helmand province, according to Marine Corps statements.
Sgt. Gurr is remembered on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the University of Utah and on the Fallen Heroes Memorial in his hometown of Vernal. His name is inscribed on Panel 30W, Line 27 of the Afghanistan Conflict Memorial Wall at the National Infantry Museum.
