Their Story
Jeremy Raymond Gullett was from Greenup, a small town in northeastern Kentucky. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a corporal in Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 4th Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment, part of the 4th Brigade Combat Team based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
On May 7, 2008, Gullett was killed by enemy fire in the Saberi District of Afghanistan's Khowst Province, a volatile region along the border with Pakistan. The Department of Defense stated his death resulted from hostile action, but did not release further operational details of the incident.
Gullett's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. In 2008, U.S. and allied forces were engaged in counterinsurgency operations against Taliban and al-Qaeda fighters, with eastern provinces like Khowst seeing frequent combat.
His body was returned to Kentucky. A funeral service was held at the First Church of Christ in Greenup, and he was buried with military honors in the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Northeast in Grayson. The Greenup County High School Army JROTC program later established an award in his memory.
Corporal Gullett was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Greenup County Courthouse and on online veterans' memorials.
