Chief Warrant Officer 3 James Edison Groves III, 37, of Kettering, Ohio, was a U.S. Army helicopter pilot. He was killed in action on March 16, 2013, in Kandahar, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Chief Warrant Officer 3 James Edison Groves III was a 37-year-old Army aviator from Kettering, Ohio. He was assigned to Troop B, 3rd Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, based at Hunter Army Airfield in Georgia.
On March 16, 2013, Groves was piloting an OH-58D Kiowa Warrior scout helicopter on a mission in Kandahar province, southern Afghanistan. The aircraft crashed in the Daman district, reportedly after being struck by enemy small arms fire. Groves and his co-pilot, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Jonathan R. Farmer, 37, of Boynton Beach, Florida, were both killed.
Groves died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. His death occurred during the final years of the conflict, as international forces were drawing down after a surge of troops earlier in the decade.
The Department of Defense announced the deaths on March 18, 2013. According to local news reports, Groves was remembered by his family as a dedicated soldier and father.
He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Air Medal, among other decorations. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus.
