U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. James Tyler Grotjan, 26, of Waterford, Connecticut, died on July 12, 2018, at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany.
Their Story
Staff Sgt. James Tyler Grotjan was a 26-year-old airman from Waterford, Connecticut. He served with the 4th Civil Engineer Squadron, based at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in North Carolina. The squadron provides engineering, construction, and emergency services support for Air Combat Command.
Grotjan died on July 12, 2018, at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany. The Department of Defense stated he was supporting Operation Inherent Resolve. According to a subsequent Air Force investigation, Grotjan was fatally injured on July 8, 2018, in a non-combat incident at an undisclosed location in Southwest Asia. The investigation found he died from injuries sustained in a vehicle rollover accident.
Operation Inherent Resolve is the U.S.-led military intervention against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq and Syria. It began in August 2014 after ISIS forces captured large territories, including the city of Mosul. The operation involves coalition airstrikes, training missions, and support for local ground forces.
Following his death, Grotjan was posthumously promoted from Senior Airman to Staff Sergeant. The Air Force released its investigation findings in October 2018. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
Grotjan was remembered by his unit for his professionalism. His name is recorded on the Air Force Memorial and in the Defense Casualty Analysis System. The 4th Civil Engineer Squadron continues to support deployed operations.
