U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Casey James Grochowiak, 34, of Vista, California, was killed in a hostile incident in Malajat, Afghanistan, on August 30, 2010.

Their Story

Casey James Grochowiak was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army. He served with Company D, 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Carson, Colorado. His military service reportedly included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.

On August 30, 2010, Grochowiak was killed in Malajat, a district in Kandahar province, Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he died of wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device (IED) attack while on a dismounted patrol. He was 34 years old.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In the summer of 2010, U.S. and coalition forces were engaged in a major offensive in Kandahar, a Taliban stronghold, where insurgents frequently employed IEDs as a primary weapon.

Grochowiak's death was recorded in the Defense Casualty Analysis System. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His remains were returned to the United States, and a memorial service was held at Fort Carson.

He is remembered on memorial walls at Fort Carson and by his unit. His name is listed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Colorado State Capitol, and he is included in the online registry of the National Infantry Museum's 'Last Roll Call'.
