Staff Sergeant Jesse James Grindey, 30, of Hazel Green, Wisconsin, was a U.S. Army soldier killed in action on March 12, 2012, in Kandahar City, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Staff Sergeant Jesse James Grindey was a 30-year-old soldier from Hazel Green, Wisconsin. He served with the 287th Military Police Company, 97th Military Police Battalion, 89th MP Brigade, based out of Fort Riley, Kansas.

According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, SSG Grindey died on March 12, 2012, in Kandahar City, Afghanistan. He was killed by small arms fire while on patrol during a mounted escort mission. No other soldiers were reported killed in the same incident.

Grindey's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2012, the conflict was in its later stages, with a surge of U.S. forces having been deployed and subsequently drawn down as security responsibilities were transferred to Afghan forces.

His death was announced by the Department of Defense. He was posthumously promoted from Sergeant to Staff Sergeant. A memorial service was held for him at Fort Riley.

Grindey's name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Fort Riley and is listed on the Defense Casualty Analysis System. He is remembered by his unit and community as a dedicated military policeman.
