Lance Cpl. Tyler Owen Griffin, 19, of Voluntown, Connecticut, was a U.S. Marine killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on April 1, 2010.
Their Story
Tyler Owen Griffin was a 19-year-old from the small town of Voluntown, Connecticut. He served as a Lance Corporal with the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, part of Regimental Combat Team 2, Marine Expeditionary Brigade-Afghanistan, based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
On April 1, 2010, Griffin died in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he was killed by hostile fire while supporting combat operations.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2010, the conflict was in its ninth year, with a major focus on counterinsurgency operations in Helmand province, a Taliban stronghold and center of opium production.
Griffin's body was returned to the United States. A memorial service was held in his hometown of Voluntown, where he was remembered by family and community members.
Griffin's name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Connecticut Veterans Memorial Park in Norwich. He is also listed on the online memorial maintained by the Defense Casualty Analysis System.
