Command Sergeant Major Kevin James Griffin, 45, of Laramie, Wyoming, was a U.S. Army soldier killed in a hostile incident in Sarkowi, Afghanistan, on August 8, 2012.
Their Story
Command Sergeant Major Kevin James Griffin was a 45-year-old career soldier from Laramie, Wyoming. He was assigned as the senior enlisted advisor to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, based at Fort Carson, Colorado.
On August 8, 2012, Griffin was killed in Sarkowi, a village in the volatile Wardak province of Afghanistan. According to U.S. military reports, he was among three soldiers who died when their unit came under small-arms fire from insurgent forces during a security operation.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2012, the U.S. had begun a drawdown of its surge forces, and the conflict had entered a period characterized by intense, localized fighting as Afghan forces assumed greater security responsibility.
The Department of Defense formally announced Griffin's death the following day. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His memorial service was held at Fort Carson.
Griffin is remembered by the 4th Infantry Division as a dedicated senior non-commissioned officer. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Fort Carson and is listed on the Afghanistan War Memorial in London.
