U.S. Army Sergeant First Class Jeremy Wayne Griffin, 40, of Greenbrier, Tennessee, was killed in a small arms fire engagement in Gichkil Village, Afghanistan, on September 16, 2019.
Their Story
Jeremy Wayne Griffin was a Sergeant First Class in the U.S. Army, assigned to Company A, 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington. He was from Greenbrier, Tennessee, and was 40 years old at the time of his deployment to Afghanistan.
On September 16, 2019, Griffin was engaged in combat operations in Gichkil Village, located in the Nangarhar Province of eastern Afghanistan. According to a U.S. military statement, he was killed by small arms fire during an engagement with enemy forces.
His death occurred during Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S. military mission that succeeded the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) combat role in Afghanistan. The operation, which began in January 2015, focused on counterterrorism and training Afghan security forces.
The Department of Defense announced Griffin's death the following day. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. His remains were returned to the United States.
Griffin is survived by his wife and three children. He was remembered by his unit for his professionalism and dedication as a Special Forces medical sergeant.
